I’m a native English speaker with a deep knowledge and understanding of the language, gained not only from formal education, but also through working experience and personal interests in literature and writing.
During much of my career, I’ve been involved in producing, editing, and careful checking of a wide variety of written material, from scientific papers and technical documentation to essays, websites, and promotional content. My focus has always been on clarity, simplicity, and accuracy of communication.
Paying close attention to the details of grammar and punctuation is something I pride myself on, but I also take joy in ensuring a piece of writing carries its message to the intended audience in the most accessible way possible. I seek out ambiguity and inconsistency and, where needed, can express complex ideas with elegant and simple phrasing while making sure I maintain the style and distinctive voice of the original writer.
Qualifications and Experience
I have an MSci (hons) degree and a PhD in physics, having specialised in nanotechnology at the University of Nottingham, where I wrote or co-authored several scientific papers and book chapters. After that, I spent five years working at a mechanical engineering consultancy, where precise communication was my stock-in-trade. I’m a professional member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, I’ve studied proofreading and copy-editing, and have extensive experience editing and proofreading work from a social sciences department of a UK university. Much of my day-to-day work involves editing scientific papers written by non-native English speakers from a wide variety of fields, including engineering, physics, geology, biology, medicine, food science, chemistry, and the social sciences.
